A letter 9 is fed vertically downwards by a driven roller 1 co-operating with a roller 2. As the edge of the latter clears a light-gate 7, 8, the roller 1 is declutched and braked and a frame 5 carrying the roller 2 and a roller 3 is moved horizontally (Fig. 2, not shown) to nip the letter between roller 3 and a driving roller 4 which at the same time is clutched to a driveshaft (not shown). There may be three spacedapart light gates (36) (Figs. 4-6, not shown). The frame 5 may be mounted on a parallel linkage (17), (17), and there may be more than two pairs of rollers. Instead of a parallel linkage, the frame member 5 may have a pin and slot connection (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown), which permits upward movement of the frame 5 against spring action to allow jammed letters to be cleared. Two devices may be used in series in letter facing machines to turn a letter through 90 degrees. Articles other than letters may be handled.</p> |
