A circuit for starting and running an arc lamp, particularly one having a metal halide filling comprises a ballast indicator 14 feeding a rectifier bridge 16 connected to a voltage doubling circuit 21, 22. When a spring loaded switch 40 is moved to a " start " position, a capacitor 31 discharges through a winding 33 of an autotransformer 33, 34 providing a voltage pulse to strike the lamp. Sufficient " follow through" current is provided by capacitors 26, 27 to enable the rectifier to take over the running current. A relay may be substituted for the switch 40.
