PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for vat dyes, organic photoelectric materials, etc., in high yield and purity by reacting a dihalogenobenzanthrone with a specific sulfonamide compound in the presence of a copper catalyst and hydrolyzing the product in the presence of an acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A 3,9-dihalogenobenzanthrone is reacted with a sulfonamide compound of formula I (R is H, an alkyl, an alkoxy or a dialkylamino) in the presence of a metal copper catalyst or a copper salt catalyst, preferably at 170-200 deg.C to provide a compound of formula II, which is then hydrolyzed in the presence of an acid catalyst to provide the objective compound. |
