PURPOSE: To adsorb propylene and high molecular weight hydrocarbons from an engine exhaust gas stream by designing a molecular sieve structure to have maximum pore openings greater than a specific value and contain non- framework cations selected from ions of the group consisting of combinations of copper, chrome, nickel and the like. CONSTITUTION: Exhaust gas is passed from an engine through an exhaust manifold and a line 11 to a certain light-off converter. An exhaust stream is then passed through a thermostat control valve and a line 12 and made to bypass a line 14 at their startup time to direct it to zeolite. The zeolite has a molecular sieve structure having maximum pore openings greater than 5.6 Å and being a coupled structure of non-framework cations selected from ions of the group consisting of combinations of copper, chrome, nickel and the like, and the exhaust stream is passed through the structure and exhausted outside of a muffler through a line 15. Therefore, high molecular weight hydrocarbons can be adsorbed. |
