PURPOSE:To obtain a protein synthesis inhibitor to be useful for an antiviral agent comprising an extract of a plant of the genus Acacia as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:This protein synthesis inhibitor comprises an extract of leaves, stems, barks, roots or seeds of a plant of the genus Acacia (e.g. Acacia melanoxylon) or a protein component contained in the extract as an active ingredient. The extract or the protein fraction has strong inhibitory activity against protein synthesis and shows antiviral activity against a great number of animal and plant viruses such as HIV, herpes virus or tobacco mosaic virus. Since the extract can be extracted from a plant of the genus Acacia occurring in a large amount in the world, the protein synthesis inhibitor can be extremely economically produced. The extract or a protein fraction is linked to an antigen by a well-known method, is provided with integrity with and permeability to bacteria or a specific cell such as cancer cell, inhibits its protein synthesis, can detory bacterial or the cancer cell and is usable as an antimicrobial agent or an anti-cancer agent. |
