The cable laying machine has an excavating machine at the front to open a trench in the ground. A hopper (19) immediately behind the excavator lays a bed at the bottom of the trench. A cable handler (17) is mounted behind the hopper, laying the cable on the bed. The cable is then covered with a layer of concrete. The concrete (18) is delivered from a hopper (40) at the top of the machine. The concrete is delivered from the hopper by an Archimedes screw (44). The screw delivers the concrete to a delivery chute (42) at the rear of the machine. The delivery chute allows the concrete to fall into the trench, covering the cable. The sense of rotation of the Archimedes screw can be reversed to allow the concrete to be delivered to the front of the machine so it is laid ahead of the cable to form the bed in the trench.
