The trailer has one or several pairs of wheels carried by a chassis (5) which has two side members (6A,6B) with a variable spacing. An arrangement (26) for receiving the axis of a drum is provided on both the side members, and is carried by a part (7) affixed to the front of the chassis. The receiving arrangement for the drum is movable with respect to the side member in a transverse direction. It is controlled by an actuator to which it is connected. The wheels of each pair of wheels are carried independently by either of the side members.
