In a method of making hydrogen a gas stream containing steam and carbon monoxide is passed over a reduced CuO/ZnO shift reaction catalyst containing as active constituents after reduction Cu and Zn in a weight ratio of 0.5 to 3 parts of zinc per part of copper, the catalyst being prepared from an aqueous solution of a mixture of soluble salts of copper and zinc by double decomposition with sodium carbonate, washing the precipitate to reduce the Na2O content to less than 0.2% by weight and calcining. The shift reaction is preferably effected at 177-260 DEG C., from atmospheric to 800 p.s.i.g. and with a space velocity of 300 to 6,500 v/v/hr. |
