A ribbon or tape comprises a sheet of parallel warp threads rovings or cords 1 interconnected on at least one surface by a weft thread roving or cord 2 which extends sinuously from one edge of the sheet to the other and which is firmly connected to the sheet by an adhesive. Each weft comprises a heat-resistant core, e.g. polyester, covered with a thermofusible substance, e.g. polyvinyl chloride which forms the adhesive. The warps can be made of glass fibre. The ribbon is made by supplying a sheet of the parallel warps to a ribbon loom and laying the weft in a sinuously extending relationship on at least one of the two surfaces of the sheet and over the whole width thereof by use of a shuttle. The weft is secured to the warps by the application of heat, e.g. at rollers 11, 12. Preferably only two warp threads 6, 7 at each selvedge of the sheet extend through heddles and are subjected to a shedding motion whilst the material between the selvedges remains constantly parallel and in the same plane. The weft is then bound at the selvedges by the two warps, the shedding of which changes after each passage of the shuttle. |
