PURPOSE:To form bits without altering number of registers in a semiconductor memory having a serial/parallel(S/P) converter and a parallel/serial(P/S) converter. CONSTITUTION:First input means 19 of first and second selectors 14, 15 are connected to output means 22. Accordingly, since the inputs to the selectors 14, 15 are switched to output data from a memory cell array 11 to first or second register 17 or 18, the registers 17, 18 can be operated together as the register at the time of reading, An input to a third sector is switched between the registers 17 and 18 to write the data of the registers 17, 18 in the array through the third selector and writing means, the registers 17, 18 can be used together as writing registers, and hence S/P converting and P/S converting directions can be freely converted. In a certain period, a bit configuration can be varied without altering number of the registers, and number of the data to be input and output within a predetermined time is increased to improve a transfer rate. |
