PURPOSE:To simultaneously obtain a light transmitting function and a light receiving function by forming a reflection coating film on the end face opposed to the light incident side of a semiconductor optical modulator. CONSTITUTION:When a modulation signal is impressed to an electrode 3a in the semiconductor optical modulator 1, signal light 15a led into the modulator 1 is subjected to intensity modulation, reflected by the reflection coating film 5 and projected from the modulator 1, so that the modulator 1 is functioned as a light transmitter. When fixed voltage is impressed to the electrode 3a so that the modulator 1 is reversely biased, the signal light 15a is absorbed in the modulator 1 and converted into a current, so that the modulator 1 is functioned as a receiver. |
