摘要 PURPOSE:To inhibit the fluctuation of ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules from occurring and to prevent the deterioration of the display quality resulting from the fluctuation phenomenon and the breakdown of the liquid crystal element resulting from the movement of the liquid crystal from occurring. CONSTITUTION:This ferroelectric liquid crystal element is obtained by interposing the chiral smectic liquid crystal 15 between the substrates 11a and 11b having the electrodes 12a and 12b respectively. In this element, the pretilt angle alpha, cone angle THETA and inclination delta of the liquid crystal 15 are selected so that the liquid crystal 15 is brought into an oriented state in which the following correlations exist: THETA<alpha+delta; delta<alpha. Also the liquid crystal 15 in this oriented state shows two stable states and the apparent tilt angle thetaa and the cone angle THETAof the liquid crystal 15 meet the following relational expression: THETA>thetaa>THETA/2. Further, this liquid crystal 15 has the temp. ranges within which the cholesteric phase, smectic A phase and smectic C phase can be formed respectively from the isotropic liquid by lowering its temp. and also the temp. range within which the cholesteric phase and the smectic A phase coexist.
