This filtration system involves the use of highly permeable synthetic materials (membranes) to allow water from a flocculent suspension such as from an activated sludge or a physical/chemical treatment system to permeate through while retaining the solid fraction on the outer side of the membrane. The membrane is wrapped around a tube made of resistant material or equivalent into which large openings are made. The entire assembly is immersed in the reactor vessel. Air backwash is applied periodically to restore flux rates. The filtration process is continuous without downtime due to backwashing. Flux rates as high as 500 l/m2/hr have been obtained consistently for the treatment of effluents from a cheese factory with a biomass having a concentration of 2.5 g/l. Effluent turbidity was less than 0.4 NTU.
