Liquid or gel detergent compositions having improved physical stability comprise, by weight of the composition: (a) from about 3 percent to about 95 % of anionic sulfate or sulfonate surfactant; (b) from about 3 % to about 40 % nonionic surfactant, preferably polyhydroxy fatty acid amide having formula (I) wherein R1 is hydrogen, C1-C4 hydrocarbyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, 2-hydroxypropyl, or mixtures thereof; R2 is C5-C31 hydrocarbyl; and Z is a polyhydroxy-hydrocarbyl having a linear hydrocarbyl chain with at least three hydroxyl groups directly connected to the chain, or an alkoxylated derivative thereof; (c) from about 0.1 % to about 3 % of calcium or strontium ions; (d) from 0.05 to 10 % of malic, maleic or acetic acid, at a molar ratio with calcium of from 0.01:1 to 10:1. |
