The method for fixing retainers involves the friction welding being limited to the immediate area of the weld surface of the connector. A retainer (B) for the connector (3, 3', 3"), is fitted along its outer surface with a locating frame (4), and a peripheral groove (5) which is a feature of the connector design. The outer rim of groove (5) of the connector (3, 3', 3") is below the weld surface by a distance (H) equivalent to the weld depth. The volume of groove (5) is to be at least 70% of the weld action volume, defined as the product of weld surface area and weld depth. At least one component of locating frame (4) is fixed to retainer (B) through spring loaded fittings, the remaining components being rigidly fixed. The upper edges of frame (4) are sharpened to bite into the panel (A).
|
