The fuel supply unit has a disc-shaped running wheel running in a pump chamber, with a number of scoops. It has at least one supply channel (15) in one of the chamber walls axial to the wheel in the vicinity of the scoops. The channel is open to the wheel. The channel runs in an incomplete circle round the turning axis of the wheel from an input aperture (19) to an output aperture. In the vicinity of the input aperture (19), the supply chamber is larger by a factor of 2 than the rest of the channel cross-section. The cross-section of the channel, from the input side, becomes continuously narrower to form a compression channel, and evens out at the end of the channel overlapping the output aperture.
