A ribbed seal for windows and doors, made from elastic material, has a foot section (1) with one or more lips (15, 16) to anchor the seal in a groove, plus a covering lip (17). The head section (2) has a closed hollow section (3) inside which is a pressure chamber (13) attached to the rear wall (4). In the sealing wall (5) at the front, there is a U-shaped recess (18) on the inside which surrounds the pressure chamber when the window or door is closed. The length of the legs (19,20) of the recess is between a third and a quarter of the distance between the front and rear walls in the uncompressed condition.
