A method and a plant for decontaminating contaminated flexible plastic waste are disclosed. Surface components of the contaminated waste are selectively chemically attacked during a closed-circuit washing process, said components being the ones with the highest levels of contamination, and the reaction products are removed, whereafter the processed waste is recovered for recycling. Said plant (100) typically comprises a washing reactor (101), at least one washing tank (110) with a means (113) for supplying a strong base to be mixed with the washing solution, a rinsing tank (210), and filter units (130, 138, 139; 220, 227) in the recirculating circuits of the washing and rinsing circuits. Said filter units operate continuously to regenerate the washing and rinsing solutions flowing through the closed circuit, and contaminated particles are filtered out.
