Thermochemical diffusion treatment of metal pts., esp. alloy steel and super-alloys, is carried out in a gas atmos. to enrich the boundary zone with N and/or C. The improved agent (I), comprising hydrazine (deriv.), diimine (derivs.), esp. azo cpds., a salt or one or these or any mixt., is added to the gas phase before treatment starts. Also claimed is a container used for introducing (I).
