<p>The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for verifying the condition of an electrical insulator (10) which is placed between two live conducting elements (11, 12) which are separated by the insulator. The insulator (10) has a continuous electrically insulating core (13) that may be covered with other types of insulating material. The insulator (10) may also be a lightening arrester consisting of stacked insulating discs. An electric field detecting apparatus (18) is positioned at a plurality of locations along the insulator (10) to measure the intensity of an electric field (14) created along the insulator (10). At each location a detected signal value of the electric field is stored within the apparatus (18) and all of these signals are analyzed to detect deviations (17) from expected values of the electric field (14) and indicative of a fault(s) along the insulator (10).</p> |
