An apparatus for the bending of sheet plates has a housing in which is arranged a clamping device for clamping the sheet plate to be worked. The apparatus furthermore has a bending tool arranged above and below the working plane of the apparatus on a support. The bending tools can be used to bend the edges of the sheet plates in two different planes, for which purpose one bending tool is first of all displaced with the support to the level of the working plane and the other bending tool is moved away from the working plane. The bending tool at the level of the working plane is then swivelled and the respective edge portion bent through a corresponding angle. With this apparatus, it is possible, by means of a simple swivel-bending operation, to work the edges of sheet plates accurately with little outlay on control technology while reliably avoiding damage to the surface of the sheets.
