Device for preparing edges of large workpiece, e.g. welding

The machine has a clamping table (11) with an adaptor plate (12) for fixing the workpiece (10). A second clamping table (17) with an adaptor plate fixes the edges of the workpiece overhanging the first table. The vertical and angular relationships between the tables are adjustable. Both adaptor plates are arched and have longitudinal and transverse seals to the workpiece. A vacuum pump creates a vacuum in the space between adaptor plates and workpiece. The second table has movable support and clamping elements. Workpiece edges are prepared by e.g. a milling machine (15). Positioning, clamping and machining are served by a control unit for automatic operation.
