A kit (10) for opening and sealing a cartridge (1) having an interior ink reservoir (2) coupled to an access port (3) extending from a reference surface (5) comprises a rigid plunger (20), a plate (30) and a rigid spherical plug (40). The plate (30) has one (T1) or more (T2) regions of varying thickness and a bottom surface (32) which is complementary to the reference surface (5) on the cartridge (1). The bottom surface (32) of the plate (30) may be matched to the reference surface (5) of the cartridge (1) in two distinct orientations such that a sealed access port (3) may be opened, refilled and sealed with a rigid spherical plug (40) by extension of the plunger (20) through the plate in each orientation to a depth determined by the length of the plunger (20), the thickness (T1, T2) of the plate (30) in each orientation, the depth of the access port (3) in the cartridge (1), and the diameter of the spherical plug (40).
