A cyan dye donor element for thermal dye transfer has a support carrying a dye layer comprising (i) a polymeric binder, and (ii) a mixt. of at least two different 2-carbamoyl-4-(N-(p-substd. aminoaryl)imino)-1,4-naphthoquinone cyan dyes. At least one of the dyes is present at a concn. of at least 10 wt.% and contains an alkyl gp. substd. with a gp. capable of intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Also claimed is (A) a thermal dye transfer assembly comprising the above donor element superposed with a dye receiving element, and (B) a dye image forming method involving heating the donor element of the assembly imagewise to transfer the dye to the receiving element.
