Synthesis of methyl t-butyl ether using Group IV oxides treated with sulfates or sulfuric acid.

A process for the preparation of an alkyl tertiary alkyl ether from a tertiary alcohol and a primary alcohol in the presence of a catalyst, characterised in that the catalyst is a Group IV oxide that has been treated with a sulfating agent. The process is particularly suited for the preparation of methyl t-butyl ether from t-butanol and methanol.
