PURPOSE:To raise a printing speed and reduce a frictional load between a medium and a printing head. CONSTITUTION:When a passbook 2 is transported to a position corresponding to a printing head 4, an automatic printing head gap adjustment is conducted for adjusting a gap between the printing head 4 and a printing surface of the passbook 2 to an optimum value and, thereafter, printing is made by moving a carriage in a printing line direction. In such a printer, an acceleration/ deceleration period operation storage part 30a is provided in a printing head operation storage part 30. The storage part 30a changes a gap between the printing head and a medium as follows. In an acceleration period from the start of the running of the printing head 4 to the arrival of the printing head 4 in a printing area of a printing line, a previously adjusted printing head gap IS increased by a preset minute amount by moving a platen or the carriage. At the arrival of the printing head in the printing area, the printing head gap is returned to the previously adjusted value. In a deceleration period after the printing head passes through the printing area, the printing head gap is decreased by preset minute amount. |
