During the manufacture of the tyre small grains or crystals of a very hard material, such as silica, are incorporated in the rubber which forms the tread. The grains or crystals are dispersed evenly throughout the tread's width and depth, some of them projecting from its surface. As the tyre tread wears down more of the grains or crystals become exposed, maintaining an abrasive surface which gives a grip on an icy surface. Other materials can be used apart from silica, either of hard particles with sharp edges or of an abrasive material such as emery.
