A device for protecting a television signal or the like against unauthorized use is provided with a processing unit which, with the aid of one or more keys, extracts control data from the received television signal for the processing of a received coded video and/or audio signal. The device furthermore comprises at least a second stage with a processing unit which processes the video and/or audio signal processed by the first-mentioned processing unit into a video and/or audio signal which can be used by a television set.
