PURPOSE: To use a structured packing in a most efficient manner by previously selecting the first crimp angle such that first and second structured packing operate at a substantially equal maximum design percentage of their overflow limit. CONSTITUTION: A low pressure column 30 has four sections I, II, III and IV wherein section II is subjected to the highest load followed by sections I, IV and III. Sections I, III and IV are made at 80% of maximum design of overflow limit and performance of section II is lower than those of sections I, III and IV. In order to improve operational performance of section II, the section II is divided into subsections and a fifth structured packing having a crimp angle larger than that of a second structured packing is used in the subsections. Consequently, turndown performance of section II can be enhanced.
