The procedure consists of cutting a slit in the ground down to a level at which it is impermeable, filling the slit with bentonite-cement, which is allowed to harden, and excavating the ground on one side of the resulting screen, stabilising the ground on the opposite side by driving nails (5) through the screen (2). The nails are 4-8m long and inserted at a rate of 1-4 nails per sq.m. The screen can be equipped with an inner reinforcing layer, and after nailing the screen is covered with a layer of reinforced concrete on the excavation side, followed by an impermeable skin to prevent the screen from drying out. The nails can be in the form of angle bars or reinforcing rods, and they can be fixed to the inner reinforcing layer or outer skin.
