The invention comprises the N,N-dimethyl derivatives of (4-chlorophenyl) phenylacetamide,* 2,4-, 2,41- and 3,4-dichlorodiphenylacetamides,* (4-fluorophenyl) phenylacetamide* and (3-methylphenyl) phenylacetamide*; N-n-butyl-N-methyl, N,N-di-n- and -iso-propyl, N,N-diallyl-N-methyl-N-n-and -iso-propyl, N-ethyl-N-n and isopropyl, N-allyl-N-methyl, -n-propyl and -ethyl diphenylacetamides; N,N-diethyl and -diallyl (4-methylphenyl) phenylacetamides; N-methyl-N-n-propyl-(2, 4-dibromophenyl) phenylacetamide; N,N-dimethyl diphenylthioacetamide, N,N-dimethyl-(3-fluorophenyl) phenylthioacetamide and N,N-di-n-propyl-(2-chloro-4-methylphenyl) phenylthioacetamide. These compounds are in general prepared by reacting together the appropriate diphenylacetylchloride and secondary amine. Examples are given for the preparation of the compounds marked * including the intermediate acid chloride from the acid. N,N-dimethyl diphenylthioacetamide is prepared by action of phosphorus pentasulphite on the diphenylacetamide.ALSO:A method for inhibiting the growth of weed grasses and broad-leaf weeds comprises applying to an area containing such weeds a compound of general formula <FORM:0955287/A5-A6/1> wherein R1 and R2 are methyl, ethyl, n- and iso-propyl, butyl or allyl, R3 is H or Cl, R4 is methyl or halogen, n is 0, 1 or 2 and Y is O or S. The invention comprises also a herbicidal composition containing an inert solid diluent or an inert liquid diluent, the latter containing an emulsifying agent and an active ingredient of a compound of the above formula; and in the case of certain specified compounds within the formula, the emulsifying agent need not be present. The usual inert diluents and emulsifying agents are described. Herbicidal tests are carried out with N,N-dimethyl, -diethyl, and -diallyl diphenylacetamides, N,N-dimethyl-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)phenylacetamide and N,N-dimethyl-(3-methylphenyl)phenylacetamide, but many other compounds within the above formula are listed. Specified forms are sprays, granules, wettable powders and emulsions. |
