The device has a guide face (13) which in its upper part adjoining the conveyor conforms with the plane occupied by the outgoing letters has an outer side wall which in this part extends with a length (L) in a direction forming an acute angle with the original transport direction. The height of the guide face in its part adjoining the conveyor equals the height of the switch (2), has a concave spherical shaped transition area (A2) where the letters are guided out from a vertical to a horizontal position, and an exit area (A3) forming with the support face (14) an exit channel whose smallest width (B1) equals the maximum height of the letters being exited. The outer side wall is angled at right angles to the original transport direction. A web (16) in the upper area of the support face (14) forms with the first guide face an inlet channel. The length (L) determines the straight line distance and is equal to the distance between the inner end point (B) of the exit channel and a vertical directed to the even surfaced upper part of the outer side wall and passing through the starting point A of the outer side wall.
