A polymer having a recurring structural unit of formula <FORM:1102237/C3/1> wherein R1 and R3, which may be the same or different, each represent hydrogen or C1- 4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, R2 is hydrogen or methyl, q is 2-6, p is 0 or 1, R1 and R11, which may be the same or different, each represent hydrogen, C1- 4 alkyl, phenyl or C1- 4 alkoxy and R111 represents hydrogen, -O-CO-CH3, -CN or -COOCH3, may be obtained by condensing a starting polymer having a recurring structural unit of formula <FORM:1102237/C3/2> in solution with a mercapto-amide amine of formula: <FORM:1102237/C3/3> The polymers preferably have a molecular weight of at most 6000 and are soluble in aqueous alkaline media. The quantity of mercapto-amide amine starting material is suitably employed in stoichiometric proportion to the anhydride function of starting polymer and the carboxylic acid group formed during the condensation may be neutralized with a base. The above starting polymers are suitably (a) copolymers of maleic anhydride and vinyl-methyl ether, vinylethyl ether or divinylphenyl ether; (b) copolymers of styrene and maleic anhydride; (c) copolymers of ethylene and maleic anhydride; (d) a copolymer of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride; (e) a copolymer of maleic anhydride and methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate or acrylonitrile. The polymer may be compounded with water, urea and ammonia.ALSO:Mercapto-amide amines of the formula <FORM:1102237/C2/1> where R1 and R3, which may be the same or different, each represent a hydrogen atom, C1- 4 alkyl or C1- 4 hydroxy alkyl, R2 is hydrogen or methyl, p is 0 or 1 and q is 2-6, may be obtained condensing an alkyl (C1- 4) ester of a mercapto carboxylic acid of the formula <FORM:1102237/C2/2> in solution with an aliphatic diamine of the formula R1-NH-(CH2)q-NH-R3 The reaction may be effected at ambient temperatures or under reflux, suitable mercaptocarboxylic acids whose esters may be used in the process being thioglycolic, thiolactic and b -mercaptopropionic acids, and suitable diamines are, for example, ethylenediamine, trimethylenediamine and hydroxyethylethylene diamine.ALSO:A hair-treatment composition for use in the waving of hair comprises an alkaline aqueous solution of a polymer having a recurring structural unit of the formula: <FORM:1102237/D1-D2/1> where R1 and R3, which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, R2 is hydrogen or methyl, q is 2-6, p is 0 or 1, R/sv and R/yF, which may be the same or different represent hydrogen, C1-4 alkyl, phenyl or C1-4 alkoxy and R/yG represents hydrogen or the radicals -O-CO-CH3 -CN or -COOCH3. The polymers suitably have a molecular weight of at most 6000 and the p hair may be impregnated with said composition, constrained to the desired shape and any undesired excess of said composition removed, after which the hair may be rinsed and treated with a hair-treatment oxidising agent. The compositions may also be employed to impregnate keratinic textile fibres such as wool, which may thereafter be dyed with direct dyes. |
