The shredder has a driven transverse drum (4) located at the bottom of a feed shaft (6), and has lengthwise knives (10) working against a stationary holder. The drum comprises a central chamber (8) inside a casing (9) with slots (11) leading to the chamber. A knife is mounted at the trailing edge of each slot with its edge protruding beyond the drum periphery. In the radial direction, the slot width can increase towards the inside. The drum can be at the top end of a bottom discharge opening in the housing.
