Sepn. of thermoplastic parts (2) from a continuous flow and sorting mixts. of different thermoplastics makes use of the differing softening points of the materials. The plastic parts (2) are heated to a specific temp. relative to the plastic material to induce softening and the continuous flow (5) is compressed by an external force which causes varying deg. of deformation according the plastic type. The change in surface area is then utilised to separate off specific parts or materials. Process appts. comprises two rotating rolls (6b) with elastic faces through which the parts or materials are passed. The softened plastic enlarges in area during passage of the nip between the rolls (6b).
