A process and apparatus for anaerobic biological purification of water polluted with organic constituents by means of anaerobic micro organisms is proposed, in which the water to be purified is passed through at least two reactors (1, 2) containing a porous support material for population with micro organisms. The water is added from above (4) and circulated (5), the support material forming a suspended bed whose degree of loosening and extent are fixed via a measurement of the pressure drop or of the rate of gas formation by adjusting the circulating volumetric stream and/or starting of a stirring device (18) in such a way that no blockages can occur.
