PURPOSE: To provide an improved air intake system and a method, wherein the white smoke discharging of an engine is reduced to a permissible level within the full operation range of a diesel engine and the battery life of the engine is not greatly shortened. CONSTITUTION: An air intake system is provided with an electric heater assembly 3 for heating air passed through the intake port of an engine to reduce white smoke discharging, and an electrically connected power adjusting circuit for adjusting the quantity of power supplied from a battery 19 and an AC generator 27 to the heater assembly. Further, the system is provided with a means 47 for sensing the revolution speed of an engine and transmitting an electric signal indicating an engine speed, and a control circuit means having contact with the transmission signals of both of the speed sensing means 47 and the power adjusting circuit to supplying the power of a different level to the heater assembly according to the indication of a sensed engine speed as to which of the battery and the AC generator 27 is a main power supply source for the heater assembly 3. |
