Liquid is filtered by upward flow through a bed 25, comprising hollow, gas-filled smooth and rounded bodies, such as particles of foamed polystyrene, synthetic fibres or silicates, of lower density than the liquid, retrained below the level of outlet overflow 30 by a sieve 26. Liquid enters tangentiadly at 28 outside annular baffle 29 to effect preliminary separation. Periodically, settled mud is withdrawn through outlet 24, causing the bed to sink and break up as clear liquid flows back through it, and the bed is washed by water from spray tube 31. Alternatively the tank may be drained by opening outlet 32, manually or automatically in response to rising pressure as the filter clogs. In Fig. 1, not shown, two tanks operate in series and baffles (14), (16) direct incoming liquid downwards to effect preliminary separation. |
