Pharmaceutical compounds having anti-tumour activity wherein the active ingredient comprises a triorganophosphinegold (I) thionucleobase of the general formula: R3PAuSR, wherein R is alkyl or aryl and wherein R is a heterocyclic compound containing a C-N chromophore bonded to S. Also a method of inhibiting tumour cell growth in animals by administering a tumour cell growth inhibiting amount of a triorganophosphinegold (I) thionucleobase with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or diluent.
