The automatic gripping pliers comprise a first (1) and second (2) arm, linked together by a hinge (3). Each of these carries a jaw at the end removed from the hinge. A traction arm (4) extends between the two main arms, and a manual blocking lever (10) is hinged (11) on the second arm to act on a temporary holding block (6) which may be urged against the traction arm (4). When the jaws have been closed to the required extend to grip something, the secondary lever (10) is operated to move the holding block against the traction arm, thus locking the jaws in place.
