The thermostatic regulator includes an element which remembers its shape at a certain temperature and returns to that shape each time the given temperature is reached. The shape memory element may be used directly within a pipe and without any other ancillary equipment to control the flow of a gas or liquid. The element may be a bar which is initially straight but which at a certain temperature becomes angled to open a valve flap. Alternatively the pipe may contain a flat plate which on attaining a predetermined temperature becomes conical with certain apertures opened to give a fine adjustment of flow.
