Refrigerator or freezer apparatus preferably of the household type, equipped with at least a hermetic reciprocating compressor provi ded with a brushless-type electric driving motor and electronic frequency contro l arrangement adapted to operate said motor at a plurali ty of different pre-selectable RPMs, wherein said compressor is provided with a pr otection feature constituted by a minimum pre-selectable c RPM (Vmin) of said motor below which said control arrangement cuts off the opera tion of said motor. Furthermore, said control arrangemen t is adapted to select a motor RPM (Vmax) which is different from any pre-selecta ble RPM when said control arrangement is supplied with a n external command or a particular combination of signals that are indicative of the operation of the refrigeration apparatus.
