<p>According to the invention, the alkoxylation of compounds containing active H atoms is carried out in the presence of specific alkaline earth metal salts of alkyl- or alkenylsuccinic acid monoesters as catalyst. Alkoxylates having a narrow homologue distribution and good appearance are obtained.</p>
