A pupil expander (10) has am elongated plastic resilient hollow ring (12) which is C-shaped in cross section, and formed into a partial circle. The ends (14, 16) of the ring member (12) have perforated tabs (18, 20 22) thereon, and are connected together by a strap (24). The pupil expander is compressed into am elongated shape. Forcep tips (42) are inserted into the ends of the ring member (12) to hold the ring member (12) during insertion of the expander (10) into the anterior chamber (48) of the eye through an incision (44) in the eye outside the location of the iris (50). An elongated tool (60) cam be inserted into the eye if required to facilitate the engagement of the ring member (12) with the iris (50). The ring member (12) is allowed to gradually expand and engage the inner periphery of the iris (50) and to be received within an elongated outer peripheral opening (26) in the ring member (12) as the forcep tips (42) are gradually withdrawn. The pupil expander (10) is removed from the eye by cutting the strap (24) adjacent one of the tabs (18, 20), grasping the tab (18, 20) adjacent the cut, and longitudinal pulling the expander (10) through the incision (44) through which it was inserted. |
