Identification of substances (A) that inhibit expression of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (I) comprises: (i) transfecting a host cell with a recombinant vector that contains a regulatory region of the (I) gene functionally attached to a reporter gene (RG); (ii) either (iia) establishing a cell line that transiently contains the vector or (iib) growing a cell line that has stably integrated the vector; (3) treating the cell lines of either sort with test cpds.; and (4) measuring expression of RG.
