The engine comprises a cylinder block containing at least one cylinder (21) containing a piston (24) which moves in line with the cylinder's axis (26), and a cylinder head (23) with at least one inlet duct and an exhaust duct with valves (29,30) and a fuel injector. The piston has a cavity (34) in its face, open towards the cylinder head and forming a combustion chamber (38) with it, while the axis (35) of the chamber's symmetry of revolution forms an angle of at least 5 degrees with the axis of the cylinder. The axis of the position cavity is angled so that its open end lies closer to the inlet duct than to the exhaust duct, and the central portion of the cavity is offset relative to the axis of the cylinder away from the exhaust valve and duct.
