A magnetic field sensor, e.g. Hall effect device (1), is used to detect the presence of a vehicle within a parking space. The sensor output is processed by a conditioning unit (2) and is fed to a threshold value detector (3) that distinguishes between the parking space being occupied and empty. For a large parking system a series of such sensors connected by bus line can supply the conditioned signals to a central computer that manages the system.
