The invention concerns a procedure for producing alkali- silicate binders used to make cores and moulds. In the procedure, the raw materials used are alkali hydroxide, water and amorphous finely-distributed silicon dioxide ash. As a first stage, a requisite amount of alkali hydroxide is dissolved in a desired volume of water while being thoroughly stirred. The result of an exothermic reaction is a hot alkali hydroxide solution. To the resulting hot alkali hydroxide solution is added amorphous finely-distributed silicon dioxide ash while the mixture is continuously stirred, and the silicon dioxide ash is allowed to react with the alkali hydroxide solution until it forms an alkali-silicate binder.
