PURIFICATION OF GLYCIDYL METHACRYLATE

PURPOSE:To produce the subject compound of high purity in a high yield while controlling formation of its polymer during purification by applying a neutralization treatment using a specified compound before purifying glycidyl methacrylate synthesized from glycidol and methyl methacrylate. CONSTITUTION:Purification of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) synthesized by ester interchange between glycidol and methyl methacrylate in the presence of a base catalyst is carried out according to the distillation method preferably under 1 to 30Torr after neutralization using a compound (preferably p-toluene sulfonic acid) of the formula (R is an alkyl or an aromatic group). In addition, this neutralization treatment is recommendably carried out by adding a compound of the formula generally in an amount of 0.5 to 3 times (in terms of the molar number of sulfone group) the moles of the base in the unneutralized crude GMA calculated while stirring the crude GMA by a stirrer vigorously as much as possible.
