PURPOSE:To efficiently produce an optically active epoxide, useful e.g. as an intermediate for synthesis of medical drug and agricultural drug, etc., with high optical purity in a high yield by reacting a peracid with a specified olefin in the presence of a specified optically active (Salen)manganese complex, etc. CONSTITUTION:This optically active epoxide of formula III is produced by reacting an olefin of formula II [Ar is a (substituted)phenyl; R<7> and R<8> are H, a 1 to 4C alkyl, a 1 to 4C alkoxycarbonyl, etc.], e.g. styrene with a paracid such as an aromatic peracid (used preferably in an amount of 2 to 10 times the mole of the olefin) in the presence of an optically active (Salen)manganese complex of formula I [R<1> is isopropyl, S-butyl, t-butyl or phenyl; R<2> to R<4> each is H, a 1 to 4C alkyl, etc.; R<5> and R<6> are H, a (substituted)phenyl, etc.; X is an acyloxy, a halogen, a tosyloxy, trifluoromethanesulfonyloxy, etc.] and a tertiary amine such as a cyclic tertiary amine or its N-oxide. |
